It has been a busy week in the land of the Ottawa Senators. The most exciting news was a surprise 8-year Jake Sanderson extension from just a couple of days ago. With the NHL regular season only a month away, the players have returned from their summers and sound more ready than ever to get on the ice. In this article, I will be going over the latest news around Sanderson, Stutzle, and Shane Pinto as we eagerly await Sens hockey.
Sanderson Ready To Bring A Cup To Ottawa
The Ottawa Senators hosted an event at the CTC this past Thursday with many members of the organization making appearances. Michael Andlauer spoke about his appreciation for the fans supporting the team, and his excitement to enter into next season. But the player that everybody was dying to hear from was the new $64 million man, Jake Sanderson.
Sanderson was asked about his new extension and why he signed long-term in Ottawa. He spoke about the commitment he has seen from his teammates (Timmy, Brady, Josh, Chabot) and how tight-knit of a group they have as the main reasons for signing his 8-year deal.
“To see their commitment to this team and to the city as well, I definitely wanted to follow them” – Jake Sanderson Ottawa Senators
Sanderson also spoke about trying to become more of a scoring threat going into next season. He talked about his game being built around playing elite defensively but also said he wants to contribute more in the offensive zone.
“I want to score more, if you look at teams in the playoffs, they go deep because their defence score and they help out their forwards.” – Jake Sanderson Ottawa Senators
If Sanderson can grow his offensive game next season, which it sounds like he is trying to, he will quickly become the team’s #1 defender.

Stutzle Speaks About His Expectations
Tim Stutzle recently sat down for an interview with Elliot Friedman and Jeff Marek of the 32 Thoughts Podcast. The interview covered a wide range of subjects, but Stutzle made it clear that his sole focus this season is winning hockey games. When questions were asked about whether he was concerned about scoring points, he was persistent in saying that he and the team had a unanimous goal to win games.
“I really believe in the this team, and think we’re going to be really good this year. The biggest key is winning as a group.” Tim Stutzle 32 Thoughts
Another trend that stood out in this interview was Tim Stützle’s confidence in himself as a player. He was asked by Jeff Marek what a good game is for himself by his standards. This was about Stutzle being critical of himself even if he put up solid counting stats. Stützle’s answer to the question was. “Domination.”
He spoke about wanting to be a player who controls the game when he is on the ice. He believes that he can become one of the league’s very best players in his career. This attitude and belief in himself is what has gotten him to the position he is in today. From the moment he stepped into the NHL, he showed that he is confident with the puck, and doesn’t back down from any matchups. Now, with a few more years of experience, he has become one of the best up-and-coming superstars who isn’t afraid of anyone.

Shane Pinto Linked To Bruins
Possibly the strangest rumour around the Senators right now is that the Boston Bruins have shown interest in trading for Shane Pinto. The expected return for Ottawa would be Fabian Lysell and/or John Beecher. The rumour started from a Boston Bruins fan website “bostonhockeynow” who wrote the following:
“Teams have been starting to wonder what Pierre’s [Senators general manager Pierre Dorion] going to do there,” the source told Boston Hockey Now on Wednesday night. “I would expect the Bruins to be one of those teams given their present and future center situation.” – BostonHockeyNow.com
This was followed up with this quote from the same source:
“The Senators would be willing to listen to NHL trade offer.” – BostonHockeyNow.com
I am not too concerned with this rumour as a Senators fan. Until we see more validity from other insiders around the NHL (specifically those who aren’t Bruins fans), I am skeptical of how serious this connection is. Not to mention, trading Pinto to a divisional rival makes no sense for the Sens’ long-term contention.
If this rumour does prove to be true, I would be quite dissatisfied with the proposed trade package. The whole argument mentioned was that Pierre Dorion may see Ridly Greig as the future 3C on the team over Pinto. But if that were true, trading for a player like Lysell would give the Senators a player in the same category as Ridly Greig. The logic behind the trade doesn’t add up in my opinion, but that does not definitively mean it’s not a true rumour. However, for the record, I am not concerned about or convinced that a Shane Pinto trade is in the works.
