Ottawa Senators Trade Targets: Five Players Who Could Help Their Playoff Push
The Ottawa Senators have battled their way into the Eastern Conference playoff picture, currently holding a Wild Card spot.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, General Manager Steve Staios has a golden opportunity to reinforce the roster with players seemingly dropping like flys.
While Ottawa has played well as a whole this season, a few key additions could help push them over the edge.
Considering the lack of depth the Senators appear to have up front because of injuries, these additions will all be forwards. So here’s a look at five intriguing trade targets that could fit the bill.
Jared McCann
Current Team: Seattle Kraken
Position: C/LW
Age: 28
Contract: $5M AAV Through 2026-27
57 GP: 14 Goals, 28 Assists, 42 Points
Jared McCann has established himself as one of the NHL’s most underrated goal scorers in recent years. He’s an elite offensive player who, combined a quick release with great hockey IQ.
This season he has taken a big step playmaking wise, but it is worth nothing the goal scoring has slowed down a bit.
However, with 42 points this season, he has the offensive tools to fit nicely with a player like Tim Stützle.
Why He Fits in Ottawa:
McCann’s ability to play both center and wing makes him an ideal fit for the Senators’ top six.
He can provide primary scoring while also helping on the power play. Not to mention he has term left on his deal at a very reasonable cap hit. It makes him more enticing, but also more valuable.
Rickard Rakell
Current Team: Pittsburgh Penguins
Position: RW
Age: 31
Contract: $5M AAV Through 2027-28
56 GP: 25 Goals, 23 Assists, 48 Points
Rakell is the kind of skilled, responsible winger that playoff teams covet.
Though Pittsburgh has had a disappointing season, Rakell has been impressive at both ends of the ice showing that he can be a dependable two-way player that can also chip in offensively.
Why He Fits in Ottawa:
If Ottawa wants a proven winger to play in their top nine, Rakell checks a lot of boxes. He’s got a history of putting up 20+ goal seasons, plays in all situations, and has been through deep playoff runs before.
His contract isn’t as simple to fit in as some others, but if he can continue to provide even 2/3 of what he has this season, it will be well worth it.
Trent Frederic
Current Team: Boston Bruins
Position: C/LW
Age: 27
Contract: Pending RFA ($2.3M)
55 GP: 8 Goals, 7 Assists, 15 Points
Frederic has become an interesting name to keep an eye on as Boston’s playoff chances continue to lessen. He’s an absolute pain to play against, and he’s got more offence in his game than I think a lot of people give him credit for.
Why He Fits in Ottawa:
If the Senators want to add some sandpaper to their lineup, Frederic is the guy. He brings a physical edge, can handle defensive-zone starts, and has enough offensive upside to chip in as a third-line centre or winger.
As a pending RFA, Ottawa would have control over his contract situation moving forward, making him a solid investment with less risk than someone who is unrestricted at the end of the year.
Ryan Donato
Current Team: Chicago Blackhawks
Position: C/LW
Age: 28
Contract: Pending UFA ($2M AAV)
53 GP: 19 Goals, 18 Assists, 37 Points
Donato has put together a really solid season in Chicago, despite playing on a struggling Blackhawks team. He’s been one of their more consistent forwards, sitting third on the team with 37 points in 53 games.
Why He Fits in Ottawa:
Donato would be a sneaky-good depth addition for the Senators. He’s a versatile, low-cost forward who can slot into multiple roles.
His price has definitely gone up from the start of the season, but he shouldn’t cost a premium asset like a first rounder.
Donato’s scoring ability and manageable cap hit make him an easy target to slot in logistically. With no long-term commitment, this move doesn’t have a whole lot of risk involved.
Justin Brazeau
Current Team: Boston Bruins
Position: RW
Age: 27
Contract: Pending UFA ($775K)
53 GP: 10 Goals, 10 Assists, 20 Points
Brazeau isn’t a household name, but he’s been a solid depth option for the Boston Bruins.
The offence isn’t anything crazy, but he does have some skill especially considering he stands at 6’5”, 220 lbs. needless to say, he fits the Senators love of big players.
Why He Fits in Ottawa:
The Senators love size and could use some more scoring in their bottom six. Brazeau also fits the mold of a potential late-bloomer.
He’s a low-risk, medium-reward target who could provide depth and energy down the stretch. With Ottawa needing some more consistent bottom six everyday players, Brazeau could be worth a shot.
Which Move Makes the Most Sense?
The Senators are in a position where they should be buyers at the deadline, but they need to be smart about it. Sacrificing major future assets doesn’t make sense unless it’s for a long-term piece.
Of the options listed, McCann would be the biggest splash, but he would most certainly come with the highest price tag.
At the end of the day, it’s up to Staios to decide how aggressive he wants to be.
If Ottawa can make a move without overpaying, any of these players could help push them back into the playoffs. The team has done enough to earn some much needed support.
