Of all the trade rumors surrounding the Ottawa Senators, this one is perhaps the most intriguing.
Jonathan Berggren Trade Rumours
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who has been following the Jonathan Berggren trade rumors over the past few weeks, the Ottawa Senators have shown interest in the Red Wings’ prospect.
Jonathan Berggren could serve as an excellent *reclamation* project for the Senators. I say *reclamation* because Berggren has been putting up excellent numbers but can’t seem to stay in the NHL lineup.

When he has received NHL ice time, he has been very productive, and in the AHL, he is a superstar. At just 23 years old, there is still a long road ahead in the career of Jonathan Berggren.
Berggren’s Statistics
So far this season, he has played the majority of the year (30 games) with Grand Rapids. In these 30 games, Berggren has put up excellent numbers with 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points.
He has been one of the most important pieces for the Red Wings’ farm team as they sit in third place in the Central Division.
Jonathan Berggren has also gotten a nine-game look at the NHL level. You might expect his results to be poor, hence the AHL demotion, but they have actually been quite impressive.
In just nine games with limited minutes, Berggren has scored two goals and three assists for five points. He also has a fair amount of experience in the NHL after playing 67 games for the Red Wings in the 2022-2023 season.
In these games, Berggren scored 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points.
They definitely don’t make your eyes pop, but it is still some solid production from a depth scorer. It’s hard to imagine why he has had so much trouble cracking the NHL roster.

Obviously, Berggren is not overly pleased with the Red Wings. He is now on the trade block and likely looking for a spot where he can be an everyday NHL player.
The Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators are two of the teams linked to him in trade talks.
Trade Package Discussion
As for what the price of Berggren would be, who knows. It’s a difficult situation because he hasn’t had trouble adjusting to the NHL level, but he still cannot hold down a consistent spot.
Usually, when a young player is traded, it’s because they haven’t been able to make the most of their opportunity.
So, would Berggren’s price be higher than some players in similar situations? Maybe, but if he is fed up with his situation, the Red Wings may be looking to trade him before the relationship sours too much.
Depending on the price, Berggren is absolutely a player that the Senators should be taking a look at. If Detroit is looking to add for the deadline, maybe they would be interested in bringing back Dominik Kubalik, who had success there last season.
That most certainly would not be enough, but it could serve as a starting position. If Berggren is to be traded to Ottawa, he could serve as an excellent depth scorer.
Fit In The Lineup
With likely one of, or both of, Dominik Kubalik and Vladimir Tarasenko on the way out, Jonathan Berggren could serve as a solid younger replacement piece.

In fact, a lot of this potential deal depends on that. If a top-nine player is dished out, it makes sense to bring him in. If not, he likely wouldn’t have a huge role on this team.
So, we will have to wait and see if the Senators make a move for Berggren. As the deadline approaches, I am sure we will hear plenty more about rumours surrounding the Detroit Red Wings prospect.
