Tom Wilson Senators Trade

Ottawa Senators Tom Wilson Trade Discussion

Today it was announced that Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals could be a possible trade target for the Ottawa Senators. Jason York, a member of the “Coming In Hot” Senators podcast mentioned that Washington is interested in sending Wilson to Ottawa. So does this make sense for the Senators? If so, at what price?

Bruce Garrioch tweet about a possible Tom Wilson Senators Trade.

What Tom Wilson Brings To The Senators

Tom Wilson is entering the final year of his contract which pays him an AAV of $5,166,667. This season, Wilson had 13 goals and 9 assists for 22 points in 33 games. Senators fans should not be expecting to get a player back who will provide the same production as Alex DeBrincat, but that doesn’t mean Wilson cannot be impactful.

Tom Wilson has always been a player who plays the game on the edge and wears down opposing defenses. This is a playstyle that is especially valuable in playoff-style hockey, which Wilson has already established he can succeed in. Tom Wilson was one of the most integral pieces of the Capital’s Stanley Cup run as he put up 15 points in 21 games.

Tom Wilson Senators Playstyle Match

DJ Smith and the Ottawa Senators have a system implemented that relies heavily on a physical forecheck and wearing down the opponent’s defense. This is a style that Tom Wilson would likely excel in which would make him a solid addition to the top-6. The biggest red flag with Tom Wilson is that he sometimes makes plays that are over the edge. These in turn make him unpredictable and susceptible to receiving suspensions, which is concerning for the Senators.

What Would The Ideal Price For Tom Wilson Be

If the Senators attempted to make a trade for Tom Wilson, I would be concerned
of them possibly overpaying. In a Wilson trade, I would like the package to be along the lines of a late first or early second with a B-level prospect. As a possible DeBrincat replacement, there are worse options out there aside from Wilson. Another concern is that Wilson is a pending UFA at the end of this season, and as Senators fans know all too well, he may be unwilling to extend. If big assets like a first-rounder are being shipped out, I would want some reassurance that Wilson would be committed for at least 2-3 seasons.

My biggest worry is Tom Wilson being traded as the main piece for Alex DeBrincat, although I fear that may be the most likely scenario.

Tom Wilson Mock Trades

Alex DeBrincat of the Ottawa Senators
Washington Receives: Alex DeBrincat
Ottawa Receives: Tom Wilson, Washington 2023 2nd

This is what I believe would be a likely Alex DeBrincat, Tom Wilson swap would look like. In this trade, the Capitals get by far the best player in DeBrincat who could rekindle some junior chemistry with former teammate Dylan Strome. For the Ottawa Senators, you get your DeBrincat replacement in Tom Wilson and you also enter the second round of this year’s very deep draft. The Senators would also have cap space to address their bottom 6 and goaltending issues in this scenario.

Tom Wilson Senators Trade
Washington Receives: *First Round Pick*, Lassi Thomson
Ottawa Receives: Tom Wilson

This trade would be dependent on a DeBrincat move occurring beforehand where Ottawa receives a mid-late first-round pick. In this scenario, Ottawa would be flipping this pick for their DeBrincat replacement, while adding Lassi Thomson as a deal sweetener. It feels as though Lassi has lost his place in the organization and a move is likely on the horizon. In this trade, Washington gets two young pieces that can contribute to the organization’s future success for a pending UFA who is coming off of a year where he only played 33 games.
