Could The Ottawa Senators Strike A Trade With The Blues?

Although it has not been a bad start whatsoever, especially considering that the Senators have been missing Brady Tkachuk since the home opener, Steve Staios has made it very clear. He is looking to add another piece to this roster.

From what we have heard, the Senators are specifically looking to add up front with a high-end forward that will be an important part of this team for the foreseeable future.

However, with the 2026 UFA class continuing to shrink with names like Adrian Kempe coming off the board, the Senators will likely have to strike a trade sooner rather than later.

However, finding a trading partner will not be easy. I’m not saying any new news when stating that top six forwards are not available too often.

One team that has struggled mightily this season is the St. Louis Blues , who have shown that there could be a potential trade to be made between the teams.

St. Louis currently sits with a record of six, nine, and four, and the club has made it known that they are willing to listen to trade offers across the board.

Now, unlike many teams that would be selling off some high-end forwards, the Blues have a number of players who fit both the style of what the Senators need, but also the age of the current core.

Jordan Kyrou Trade Potential

Perhaps the most intriguing name to look at is Jordan Kyrou. Kyrou has found himself in the doghouse in St. Louis over the past few seasons, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he is an elite offensive player who is more than capable of playing a top 6 role.

Last season with St. Louis, he had 36 goals and 34 assists for 70 points in 82 games. This season, he is also performing decent, however, not quite up to his standards with 11 points in 18 games.

Throughout his career, Kyrou has been around that 70 to 75 point range. His career high came back in 2021-22, where he had 75 points in 74 games, as well as 9 points in 12 playoff games.

He has proven that he is more than capable of putting up elite offensive results. At 27 years old and signed to a friendly deal, until the 2030-2031 season at $8,125,000 per year, he would be a very attractive option for the Ottawa Senators to take a look at.

Of all the top 6 players on the Blues, Kyrou feels like the most realistic chance of being traded away. Now, a pipe dream would be Robert Thomas, whom we will talk about in a second.

However, if Steve Staios wants to make a swing for the fences and an effective one at that, Jordan Kyrou makes the most sense. Now, in a perfect world, the Senators would be able to pry Robert Thomas away from the St. Louis Blues.

Robert Thomas Trade Potential

With that said, I don’t see this as being possible. Last season, Thomas put up 81 points in 70 games, which was a 5-point decrease from his 86 points the year prior.

This season, he has just 12 points in 15 games, but he has proven that he can be a top 20-30 player in the entire NHL. Now, for the Ottawa Senators, you likely want someone who is more of a goal scorer.

But when someone as good as Thomas is available, you have to at least take a look at trading for him. Again, this deal feels far-fetched, but it’s also worth noting he has a very close relationship with Brady Tkachuk, as Thomas lived with the Tkachuk family a number of years ago.

Dylan Holloway Trade Potential

Another intriguing name to look at would be Dylan Holloway. However, again, I feel like it is more likely St. Louis would hold on to him rather than trade him away.

He is a pending restricted free agent with a cap hit of $2.94 million per season, which would be extremely friendly for the Ottawa Senators’ cap situation. Last season, Holloway put up 63 points and 77 games and proved that he, too can be an elite top 6 player.

But once again, this deal feels less likely than that of Jordan Kyrou. So what would a potential Jordan Kyrou trade look like? It’s hard to know where to begin.

Now, St. Louis would want a haul and probably a first-round pick in this upcoming draft, which, as we know, Ottawa is unable to give them as things stand right now.

Outside of that, you would imagine they would want one of the top 2 prospects on the Senators team, which would have to be Logan Hensler and Carter Yakemchuk.

It would be a very steep price to pay, and a negotiation where Steve Staios would have to try and persuade the Blues to take some sort of other package. The other option is a hockey trade in which we see the Senators move out a current roster piece to bring in Kyrou with some bonus assets going the other way as well.

You would have to wonder who could be a potential casualty in this sort of deal. Assuming the top 6 would not be changed whatsoever, the most likely candidates would have to be one of Ridly Greig or Fabian Zetterlund.

Bur, this is all just speculation as things stand right now. We’ll have to wait and see if the Senators are able to pull off a trade with the St. Louis Blues to acquire that difference maker they are looking for up front.
