Jacob Bernard-Docker of the Belleville Senators

Which Belleville Senators Could Make The NHL Jump Next Season

Senators Finally A Cap Team

The Ottawa Senators will be facing a new but good problem this season as they will finally be a cap team. Depending on what happens with current RFA’s Alex DeBrincat, Shane Pinto, and Erik Brannstrom, the team will be tight on cap space for the 2023/2024 season. In This article, I am going to be looking at some of the Belleville Senators who have a chance to crack the NHL lineup and make a difference.

Recap With Belleville/Ottawa

The first Belleville Senators candidate is 22-year-old defender Jacob Bernard-Docker. JBD is your prototypical shutdown defenseman who makes his money defending his zone. The former first-round pick has played a small sample size in the NHL over the last two years playing in a total of 32 career games earning two assists in the process.

JBD has not yet shown an ability to be a true shutdown force in the NHL and has struggled against stronger, faster opponents. In Belleville however, Bernard-Docker has shown he is capable of playing top-line minutes while shutting down the opponent’s best players. This season, JBD had two goals and four assists in 41 games while playing at a high level in his zone.

Looking To Next Season

Jacob Bernard-Docker is in a position where he is expected to earn a spot with the Ottawa Senators next season. Pierre Dorion has gone on the record saying that the bottom pairing right-hand side is “(Bernard-Docker) His spot to lose”. Given the history of Bernard-Docker, it is likely the current RFA will be signed for around 850-950k on a one-year deal. This kind of contract could be exactly what the Sens need for their bottom pairing.

This is likely the last opportunity for the first North Dakota Senator to show he can be a piece moving forward for Ottawa. I am hoping to see JBD take the step into being an everyday NHLer and I am confident in his ability to do so.

Egor Sokolov

Recap With Belleville/Ottawa

The next player to discuss is Belleville right winger Egor Sokolov. Sokolov has done just about everything he can at the AHL level to earn a look with the NHL squad. This season, Egor Sokolov had an all-star season that saw him score 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 70 games. Sokolov was dominant in his time spent with Belleville and has nothing left to prove at that level.

Sokolov made the most of his opportunity in his five-game NHL stint. He played well in limited minutes and also scored his first career NHL goal. Sokolov had a goal and an assist in five games with Ottawa this season.

Looking To Next Season

While Egor has not been publicly mentioned as a player with a spot to lose, I see him as a fit on the third/fourth line right wing. Sokolov, like Bernard-Docker, is an RFA who will likely be paid in the ballpark of 850-950K. I believe that Sokolov has shown he is capable of playing an offensive role in the NHL, and can contribute on the scoresheet.

In my eyes, he would be an upgrade in the bottom six over players in his position like Watson and Gauthier. For a cap-crunched team, I think Sokolov could be a very underrated addition to a lackluster bottom six and could spark some much-needed depth offense.

Ridly Greig

Recap With Belleville/Ottawa

Ridly Greig is the player who saw the most time in the NHL this season of those mentioned. In Greig’s first full pro hockey season, he showed very well in his split time between the Belleville and Ottawa Senators. With Belleville, Greig had a rookie season that saw him score 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 39 games.

With Ottawa, Greig scored two goals and seven assists for nine points in 20 games. Greig showed this season why he is still the team’s #1 prospect and gave fans some “wow” moments flashing skillful potential. The biggest concern for him is his size, but even being a smaller player at 5’11 and 163 lbs, Greig showed he can hold his own in the NHL.

Looking To Next Season

Greig is a very interesting option compared to Bernard-Docker and Sokolov given his age and limited pro experience. I believe that he is NHL-ready, but I would not be surprised if the organization decides he should play top minutes in the AHL rather than be limited in the NHL. In my opinion, Greig should compete for the third-line left-wing position with a guy like Joseph.

If he does not earn the third-line spot, I would prefer he plays with Belleville instead of on the fourth line. Injuries are bound to occur, and Greig would likely be the first player I would call up in that sort of situation.
